Ayurveda’s Approach To Ovarian Cysts

Ovarian cysts are small sacs filled with fluid that develop in the ovaries of women. The most common symptom of an ovarian cyst is heavy bleeding during menstruation that can sometimes last up to 15 days. Very often, this is accompanied by pain and heaviness in the lower abdomen, chronic constipation and loss of appetite. Ovarian cysts are generally harmless, but they should not be ignored as they can cause problems like excessive bleeding. Physicians who practice conventional western medicine often suggest surgery to remove the cysts. However, Ayurvedic physicians treat the condition without surgery. Kerala, in South India, is a favoured destination for those who prefer the holistic treatment Ayurveda offers, as the physicians there have 5000 year old tradition of healing that has been tested and proved, again and again, throughout the centuries.

The Treatment

To ease pain and discomfort in the abdominal area, treatment usually begins with castor oil being applied for the first three days on the abdomen around navel area- preferably virgin oil. Then gentle heat with a heating pad is applied indirectly. This procedure is done early in the morning and at bedtime too, and is continued for a few more days even after the pain has subsided. The patient’s diet also strictly controlled for some days. She is given green gram cooked into a ‘kichiri’ or porridge for one meal, and the other main meal of the day is also a very light one, for heavy foods are difficult to digest and this in turn triggers more pain. However, this diet and procedure are prescribed only after the physician had determined the nature of the patient’s constitution. Ayurveda is a highly personalized form of healing and the protocols for each individual vary. This is why it is important to consult a good Ayurvedic physician before starting any treatment.

Herb Power

Ayurveda places great emphasis on the use of natural herbs like red cloves that cure hormonal imbalance and maintain the right equilibrium between estrogen and testosterone hormones in women. Chaste berry and dandelion normalize irregular menstrual periods and hormonal disorders too. Bee pollen is very effective in strengthening the reproductive system while walnuts, red chestnuts, milk of thistles, wild yam and wild oats are also well-known Ayurvedic home remedies for ovarian cyst. Liquorice has the ability to affect the adrenal glands which regulate the production of hormones in the body. By regulating hormone production, liquorice has the power to dissolve ovarian cysts naturally. Shatavari or Asparagus racemosus gives strength to the uterus and helps to restore the normal functionality of the female reproductive organs. Lodhra or Symplocus racemosa is another wonderful plant and the bark is used to shrink the cysts. Kachnaar Guggul is classical Ayurvedic formulation that is another effective herbal remedy for ovarian cysts, tumors and growths.

In Ayurveda, Aloe Vera is known as “Kumari” and the juice is known as “Saar”. Kumari saar is an effective way to treat ovarian cysts as it is cleansing in nature.
Herbal remedies for ovarian cysts may not work as quickly as pharmaceutical cures. Most herbs take at least three months to begin to balance the hormones. Hormonal balancing is just the first step in controlling ovarian cysts so it is important that the herbs be taken long enough for them to have an effect. It may be six months or longer before results can be seen …yet the results are proof that faith in Ayurveda is well placed.
